Fuel for the 5K!

The Mercantile was on hand to pass out fuel, water, and congratulations to over 700 runners who participated in the first annual Sweetwater 420 Fest 5K. Volunteers from Operation Boot Camp were on hand to manage the race and hand out tee shirts to runners of all ages from all over Atlanta. http://www.operationbootcamp.com/ Hats off to Mark Clement, Candler Park's special events officer, for putting the race together and making it all happen.

The Mercantile was proud to debut Franny's Raisins at the 5K Race. Franny's Raisins are an all organic raisin grown and produced for over 50 years by a family in California. They are truly the BIGGEST organic raisin in the world. They were a big hit especially with our superstar kid runners. You'll be able to get Franny's Raisins only at The Mercantile. http://www.frannyorganic.com/

Pets Parade Through Candler Park

On Saturday, April 12, The Atlanta Humane Society held its annual pet parade in Candler Park. Of course, we couldn't bear to miss bonding with our furry friends. Plus, Phoebe, our mascot, demanded we take her! As we sat in our booth watching countless pets and people walk by, we were not only amazed by the turnout despite the weather, but felt truly thankful to be part of a neighborhood where so many great events and people converge.

The Pet Parade raised over $238,000 for the Atlanta Humane Society. Our local humane society has to be one of the best in the country and we encourage you to check out the myraid of events and programs they make available. Check them out at http://www.atlantahumane.org/

The Intercontinental Hotel Group and Hotel Indigo took the event by storm when they won first and second place, respectively for fundraising. Be sure to check out the photos on our web album.

In addition to the work of the humane society, we had an opportunity to learn about all sorts of other friends of animals in the area. Some of the folks we had an opportunity to talk with were Adopt A Golden Atlanta ( http://www.adoptagoldenatlanta.com/ ) and Riley's Fund ( http://www.rileysfund.org/ )

Also in attendance and preparing us for next weekend's phenomenal event in CP was Sweetwater Brewery. Don't forget the 420 Sweetwater Fest on April 19 and 20. http://www.pemi.net/420fest/

And last, but never least, we were wowed by the talents and eccentricities of The Feed and Seed Marching Abominables. We'd heard of this group, but never seen them perform. What a treat they are for pets and people alike. What wow factor! What fun!! http://www.seedandfeed.org/

You can check out photos from all of this and more on our web album at the link below.

See you in Candler Park!

Candler Park takes 1st in the ING Marathon Cheering Contest!

The Mercantile was honored to be part of Candler Park's 2008 cheering section for the ING Marathon on March 30. This year, Candler Park cheerleaders succeeded in winning the first place prize of $10,000 to benefit the park. What a win! It's no wonder, however. Participants gathered at 6:00 am with their cowbell noise makers in the midst of wind and rain to display orange hats, orange balloons, orange tree wraps, orange tee shirts, orange shoes, and a cheery banner encouraging the runners on past mile 8. And let's not forget the biggest surprise hit of the cheering section; our own crew of professional belly dancers clad in orange! Thank you, ladies!

The planning committee for the cheering section included Mary Alice Bray, JoJo Ross, Carla Key, Crystal Budd, and Janea Boyles. Also, a great crew of enthusiastic neighbors joined us to make it a robust crowd. The runners really seemed to love it and we can only imagine what momentum Candler Park can ride on for next year's contest.

Congratulations Candler Park!
